Development of Electric Stove Standard and Standard Implementation Strategy in Nepal

The assignment was led by Nepal Energy Foundation in collaboration with CLASP, with the financial support from United Nations Foundation / Clean Cooking Alliance (formerly, Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves). Project duration is of 1 year starting from January -December 2018. Two phases of the project are: Phase I – Standard Development for Electric Stoves, and Phase II – Preparation of Implementation Strategy. Electric Stove Standard is a national document endorsed and owned by Government of Nepal / Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology.

Discussion on Problems and Challenges of Electricity Distribution System Reforms in Nepal

To facilitate the reform process of electricity distribution, a preliminary discussion program was organized by Nepal Energy Foundation in collaboration with Niti Foundation on 27th January 2019, which convened experts of the electricity sector to share ideas on problems, challenges, and way forward for the electricity distribution system in Nepal.

Workshop on Role of Women in Household Energy Efficiency

On 27th July 2018, the workshop was conducted in partnership with Centre for Energy Studies, Institute of Engineering, and Women Network for Energy and Environment- Nepal (WoNEE) and the aim of workshop was to provide information about energy efficiency to women, with the objective of promoting household Energy Efficiency by women. Selected experts of energy sector, and the participants from and invited by WoNEE took part in the workshop.

Renewable Energy Training to Women

Two trainings were conducted in April 2018 under this activity, one in Bara and one in Kathmandu in financial support from AEPC and collaboration with WoNEE. Aim of the training was to provide knowledge of renewable energy, electrical safety, role of civil society in energy sector, productive use of energy, and energy efficiency (conservation) among the women of different districts.

Research on “Green and Inclusive Energy in Nepal”

Green and Inclusive Energy (GIE) is a five-year strategic partnership of Hivos with the Dutch government, & launched in 2016. This is an advocacy & and lobby program funded by Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which aims to support a transition towards green and inclusive energy systems not only to better meet the energy access needs of the poor and reduce climate change, but also lead to improvement in the family health, food supplies, income and opportunities for women in order to allow them to participate more productively politically, socially and economically. NEF had conducted research on “Green and Inclusive Energy in Nepal” with the support from Practical Action. Major objective of this research project was to generate qualitative and quantitative empirical evidences for informed policy making process in energy sector which will be used to implement effective lobby and advocacy strategy and intervention in energy policy making process. The project started from September 2017 and ended on December 2017.

Piloting a project on Propeller Turbine for Low Head Energy Generation

Low head energy generation through use of Propeller turbine was tested in Peru and was a success, which is not used in Nepal yet. Thus, Nepal Energy Foundation with the support from Practical Action Nepal conducted a pilot project to study the feasibility of Propeller Turbine in Nepal. The test site was selected in Bukhel, Lalitpur and the results showed that Propeller Turbine can be used for energy generation using low head in Nepal too. Duration of the project was one year starting from January to December 2017.

Baseline Study for developing a gold standard voluntary carbon project on charcoal production and consumption

The study was conducted from October to December 2017 with the financial support from HELVETAS Nepal. Study was done on the prevalence of traditional pit system being practiced in the study districts, and charcoal yield from traditional pit system by informal sector, quality of charcoal, occupational health and safety of the workers involved in charring process was determined. Similarly, the project studied about the production potential and economics of charcoal production, explored the consumption of charcoal produced by informal sector and documented entire value chain of production through consumption of charcoal by type (Bee-hive briquette, Pillow briquette, cylindrical briquette, loose charcoal and Pulverized charcoal) using modern technologies by the formal sector.

End-line Survey of Improving Gender-Inclusive Access to Clean and Renewable Energy in Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka

The study took place from July and concluded on October 2017 with the financial support from Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal. Improving Gender- Inclusive Access to Clean and Renewable Energy in Bhutan, Nepal and Sri- Lanka is an Asian Development Bank Supported project aiming to increase rural women’s access to affordable and reliable clean and renewable energy sources and technologies in selected project sites in Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, and the major objective of the survey was to analyze the project’s impact against the mentioned indicators.

Dialogue/ Workshop on Efficient Management of Micro Hydro

ISET-Nepal supported NEF in conducting this dialogue, which took place on 17-18 September, 2017 at Kavre. The major objectives of the workshop were to provide knowledge and sensitize the MHPs and CREEs on resilience concept, to discuss about efficient management of MHPs, and to impart knowledge about the Good Governance through efficient management, transparency and effective services.

Assessment on quality of access to energy services, institutional structure and economic viability of various technological options for electrification in Rural Nepal

NEF in partnership with Universal Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd. had conducted the study from February to August 2017 with the financial support from United Nations Development Project (UNDP) / Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL). Project assessed the quality of electricity services provided in rural Nepal by different options such as micro hydro, solar PV, solar-wind hybrid and community rural electrification program of NEA, and provided recommendations for reliable and affordable electricity to rural Nepal.
